Tip & split
Example: 18% tip on an $85 bill, split 2 ways
How to calculate a tip
- Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100 — that is the tip.
- Add the tip to the bill for the total.
- Divide the total by the number of people to split evenly.
Mental shortcut: 10% is the bill with the decimal moved one place left. Double it for 20%; add half of it for 15%.
Common tipping percentages
| Service | Typical tip |
|---|---|
| Restaurant, table service | 15–20% |
| Exceptional service | 20–25% |
| Food delivery | 10–15% |
| Bartender | 15–20% or $1–2 per drink |
| Taxi / rideshare | 10–15% |
| Hairdresser / barber | 15–20% |
Customs vary widely by country — in much of Europe and Asia service is included or a small round-up is enough.

Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Convention in the US is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but many people simply tip on the final total for simplicity — the difference is small.
How much is a 20% tip on $50?
$10, for a total of $60. A quick way: 10% of 50 is 5, doubled is 10.
How do I split a bill with different tip amounts?
Calculate each person’s share of the bill first, then apply each person’s tip percentage to their own share.
Is the tip calculated before or after a discount?
Etiquette says to tip on the original, pre-discount amount — the staff did the same work regardless of your coupon.
Does the calculator round the split?
It shows each share to the cent. For an uneven split, round up and let the small remainder go to the tip.
